Fast and Slow Shutter Speed (in class photos)
Fast Shutter Speed:
Approximately what shutter speed did you use to freeze action?
1/250 sec.
ISO: 6400
WB: Incandescent
What action did you freeze?
The top middle photo is a picture of flowing fabric, frozen in motion.
What was your distance, and point of view for the photo?
The photo was taken close to the subject, from the front.
Describe any compositional elements (tools) that are present in or that streengthen the photo.(rule of thirds, positive and negative space, line, shape, pattern, texture, strong colors, repetition, contrast...)
- The fabric and subject are placed just slightly off-centered.
Slow Shutter Speed:
Approximately what shutter speed did you use to purposely blur action?
1.0 sec
ISO: 800
WB: Fluorescent
What motion, or part of the image shows blur?
In the bottom middle photo her head and arms are blurred in motion.
What was your distance, and point of view for the photo?
- I took the picture at a medium distance catching from the knees to the head.
- The perspective is strait on from the front.
Describe any compositional elements (tools) that are present in or that strengthen the photo.(rule of thirds, positive and negative space, line, shape, pattern, texture, strong colors, repetition, contrast...
- the subjects are at the center of the photo.

Fast and Slow Shutter Speed (homework photos)
Painting with Light
What shutter speed did you have the camera on?
1/8
What light source did you use to create the painting?
Two of the light sticks
How did you achieve the image/effect?
The person in the photo moved the red light stick in circles while someone in the back moved the pink one around.
What impact does the photo have? How would the viewer feel looking at your photo?
This image has a semi warm feeling created by the red light.

Kaleidoscope Photos
Aperture
What f-stop did you have your camera set to create a shallow depth of field? What ISO and WB settings did you use?
f-stop: f/5.3
ISO: 3200
WB: Auto
What f-stop did you have your camera set to create a large depth of field?
f-stop: f/25
What ISO and WB settings did you use?
ISO: 4000
WB: Incandescent
Which photo is better? Why?
In my opinion the top middle photo is better. This photo has a shallow depth of field where the clock is in focus and the book and glasses are blurred out of focus. The red light creates a warm yet mystifying feeling like something from a movie.
Why would you want to use a shallow depth of field?
Using shallow depth of field the background is blurred and the focal point is clear and in focus. You might want to take advantage of this setting if you wanted to minimize a messy distracting background in an image.
When/in what situation would a large depth of field be better?
A large depth of field would be better for something like landscape photography where your trying to capture as much detail in a single photo as possible.

Strongest and Weakest
This is the strongest photo in my portfolio because it best demonstrates what makes up a "good" photograph. The positioning of the clock to the right of the photo successfully portrays the rule of thirds. The clarity of the clock determines it as the focal point of the picture. I shot this photo with the camera settings on f/5.3, ISO 3200, and white balance on Automatic. This allowed me to get the clock in focus and the book and glasses blurred creating a simple background. I used a red light to add a creative touch and add a specific feeling to the photograph.
This is one of the first photos I took making it the image with the weakest composition. Despite the strong leading lines the image lacks in visual appeal. Everything is in focus which creates a rather chaotic looking background. In addition, the glare from the sun on the lens adds an unprofessional amateur look instead of the "creative" look that was aimed for. |
