Personal Narrative - Melancholy
Written Statement
The word I chose to capture in my series was Melancholy. As an artist I find that there are a number of things I draw inspiration from. Primarily, I find inspiration in emotion. I strive to create artistic pieces that evoke an emotional response in my audience. In order to express this idea I photographed my sister in various poses using different props. Ultimately I want to convey emotion with my photography. Not only do I want to show emotion through my photos, I also want my audience to develop their own interpretation for my pieces. I think that often people focus on the “artists” intent in their own photography. While the artists intended meaning is important, I want my work to be primarily open to interpretation. The beauty of my pieces is that their meaning is different depending on who is observing them. When viewers look at my work, I want them to feel either inspired or questioning. Lastly, photography is important to me because it initiates inspiration and is an outlet for creativity.
